Long Range Drones: Ultimate Guide

Image
A long-range drone is essential to capture the beauty of this world from above across vast distances. So many factors can influence a drone’s long-range capabilities. This ultimate guide to flying long-range drones answers all your related questions, so let’s get started! What to look for in a long-range drone When buying a long-range drone , you must consider a few critical characteristics to fly without issues. - Transmission system:  This is the most crucial component of a drone that will transmit the video back to the pilot and may receive radio input from the remote controller. The maximum transmission range depends on the manufacturer and the quality of the unit. - Battery life:  This is another essential factor in deciding how far you can fly the drone. It doesn’t matter if your transmission system is excellent; you cannot fly far if your drone’s battery life is poor. Remember that you must also return the drone with energy to spare when flying long-range. - The dro...

Keeping Drones Out of Prison Airspace: a DRONELIFE Exclusive from Drone Forensics Experts at SkySafe

Zboralski, CC BY-SA 3.0 The Prison System’s Next Opportunity: Drone Tracking and Protection Against Threats to Airspace Security Keeping drones out of prison airspace has become a critical challenge.  Here, experts at airspace security and drone forensics firm SkySafe discuss how stakeholders can protect correctional facilities. Continue reading below, or listen: The following is a guest post by Emily Rhodes, VP of Marketing at SkySafe .   DRONELIFE neither accepts nor makes payments for guest posts. With drones accessible to the general public, secure facilities like prisons are encountering skyrocketing cases of contraband, including cell phones, food, drugs, and weapons, from their airspace. This nefarious activity can create  perilous situations for those inside and outside the prison walls. A report by the  U.S. Department of Justice  found that, on average, illegal UAV drops increase by 50% or more annually – a rate that continues to worsen. Bey...

Best Beginner Drones for FPV

Image
In the all the realm that is Droneland, one of the pinnacles of drone flight is that of First-Person View flying, more commonly known as FPV. This style of flying is a true test of one’s skills, and unlike GPS flying, it is completely manual. Now, don’t think for a moment that I am putting down GPS flying and the pilots that do so. I am after all one of those pilots myself. Being able to fly cinematically and get the very best photos or videos, well, that takes skills and time to learn as well. Both styles of flying have their place. They are very different from one another and getting into FPV can be quite a challenge, due to there being extra equipment involved and then acquiring the skills to do it well, which I’m still working on myself. A GPS system is mostly ready to go out of the box and even a beginner can get into the air rather quickly and meet with some success. FPV will take you some time to get it; it will take dedication and plenty of practice. I can say when I started my...

How to Factory Reset DJI Avata (Step-by-Step Guide)

Image
Those of us who have had DJI drones in the past and present are aware that, typically there is an option to return those aircraft to their factory status. When we turn our attention to the DJI Avata, there is no such option, as of now, and more likely than not, there won’t be one. To be perfectly clear, there is no Factory Reset option for the DJI Avata. How do I know this? Well, I asked DJI about it. I took the time to sit in the call cue and waited, listening to that dreadful music DJI has had forever. Hey, DJI, can we please get some different hold music? When I did get someone on the phone, and asked them just how one would reset the DJI Avata to its factory state. This answer was short and sweet. You can’t! Eek! Here’s how they put it. The DJI Avata ties to multiple other pieces of equipment such as the: - Goggles 2 - Integra Goggles - V2 Goggles - Motion Controller - Motion Controller 2 - FPV Controller 2 Oh, my goodness, right?! It simply wasn’t possible to make the Avata in the...

FAA Reauthorization Clears the House of Representatives: Package Calls for More Progress on BVLOS Flight, Drone Integration

Image
Photo: @MRobbinsAUVSI (Twitter) The U.S. House of Representatives Transportation and Infrastructure Committee passed the FAA Reauthorization Package,  Securing Growth and Robust Leadership in American Aviation Act ( H.R. 3935), by a vote of 63 – 0 today.  The Act calls for the FAA to commit to timelines for a BVLOS rulemaking, UTM, and drone integration. The legislation would provide funding for the FAA for the next five years: the current authorization expires in September of 2023.  The package addresses all aspects of the FAA’s purview, and Title VI – Aerospace Innovation , Sections 601 – 687 , addresses  Unmanned Aircraft Systems and Advanced Air Mobility. Timeline for BVLOS Rulemaking One notable aspect of the Act concerns a rulemaking on drone operations Beyond Visual Line of Sight (BVLOS.). While the BVLOS Aviation Rulemaking Committee released their recommendations in March of 2022, no Notice of Proposed Rulemaking (NPRM) has followed.  The Act would re...

Best DIY Drone Kits with Camera

Image
Buying a ready-to-fly drone can be a great experience, but after buying a couple of them, you realize that they limit you in the modifications you can make, and you sometimes don’t understand how it all works. Disassembling an RTF drone when you don’t know what you’re doing could lead to damages, and you could even void your warranty. That’s why you should consider a DIY drone kit. These kits come with all the parts the drone needs to work, and your job is to assemble them. If you’re a student or interested in building drones for personal use or FPV, they are an excellent way to understand how drones work. A drone kit with a camera also allows you to experience taking the first footage with something you built. With the various options available, which are the best DIY drone kits with a camera? The Joshua Bardwell FPV kit is perfect for those interested in FPV, and the DJI and QWinOut kits are ideal for those who want to build and customize huge rigs for personal or commercial use. Th...
